Origins, Rise And Impact of AI In China

Project Abstract

This project is an interesting and valuable exploration and study of AI in China. According to the previously collected literature and books on AI in China, the history of AI in China has not been explored in depth. This study sifted through a large amount of literature and did not find any literature that considered the entire Chinese history and society, which is still lacking in the field. Therefore, this study will delve into all historical factors after the founding of New China. The main methodology of this work is to divide the study of Chinese AI into three main parts according to the chronological and developmental process. In addition, interviews with AI researchers were collected and small-scale interviews and surveys were conducted to uncover new and insightful perspectives on AI in China. Finally, this study was implemented using Python on Chinese AI literature data. The results of the study show that from the 1950s to the 1980s, AI did not develop until 1979 due to the Soviet Union’s “philosophical discourse,” the deterioration of Sino-Soviet relations, and China’s “Cultural Revolution.” After that, with China’s reform and opening up, the research of scientists such as Wenjun Wu, and the Chinese government’s recognition of the importance of AI, AI began to emerge in China. From the 1980s to the 1990s, artificial intelligence in China began to develop gradually. Under the leadership of Chinese President Deng Xiaoping, the 863 Program and the Climbing Plan were implemented, the Chinese Society for Artificial Intelligence was established, and China’s AI research results began to increase year by year to reach a medium level of development. After entering the 21st century, due to the changes in education and economic situation, the increase in Chinese AI research literature, and the promotion of various policies, China began to move towards the ranks of a major AI country.
