Improving medication management with a medication dispensing robot

Project Abstract

With the continuous advancements in technology in this current age, The healthcare sector has drastically changed with the advancement of new technologies for the better. However, the medication management and adherence system in the healthcare sector needs more attention. This paper proposes a robotic approach to solve this problem with a medication dispensing robot, to help both patients and carers improve medication management and adherence. The main features for this robot are the voice-recognition based dispensing system, the reminder system and the security system for adding medication. The main hardware components used include; the Arduino Uno rev3 micro controller as the heart for each system, the positional servo motor for dispensing medication and adding medication, LEDs for the reminder system and an optical fingerprint sensor for the security system to open and close the hatch for adding medication to the robot. I have programmed the functionality of the robot in both Python and C where python has been used for the voice-recognition based dispensing and reminder systems, with C being used for the security system. The robot is made from wood with the use of laser cutting, and uses a plastic tube to hold the medication securely inside the robot. This robot provides a solution to this problem for improving medication management and adherence, while enhancing the patients overall health outcome.
