Teaching soft skills using game design

Project Abstract

This project explores the potential of video games to teach soft skills like teamwork, communication and problem-solving. A 2D top-down local multiplayer escape room game with a pixel art style was created to test this concept. The aim was to determine if players could enhance their collaborative skills through game-based problem-solving within a given time limit. The project used an agile software development approach with the Unity Game Engine to create a flexible and accessible game. The gameplay revolved around two players solving puzzles in a time-limited escape room using communication and cooperation.Testing involved sixteen participants from various age groups, providing feedback through a questionnaire. Results showed that while the game encouraged communication, it didn’t’ have a perfect balance between education and fun.The project concluded that multiplayer escape room games have potential for soft skills development, but further work is needed to enhance players immersion. This approach could be valuable in promoting learning through interactive gameplay.
