Food Sharing App — FOSHA

Project Abstract

Food waste has become a critical environmental and social issue, with vast quantities of edible food discarded annually, exacerbating problems like hunger, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource depletion. To address this challenge, this research proposes an innovative mobile application that combines gamification elements with a community-driven approach to food redistribution, promoting sustainable consumption practices. The unique proposition is to leverage technology and gamification principles to inspire long-lasting behavioral change, an area that remains underexplored in tackling food waste. The application aims to create an engaging platform tailored to diverse settings, enabling users to easily share surplus food while fostering mindful consumption through social features, rewards, and educational resources. The methodology employed an iterative, user-centered design approach, involving prototyping and refinement based on focus group feedback. The main approach was to develop a cross-platform mobile application using Flutter to ensure accessibility across devices. The key outcome is a food sharing application that provides a platform for users to post, browse, and acquire surplus food items, facilitated through features like barcode scanning for efficient tracking. This system contributes a novel framework that harnesses technology and gamification to drive sustainable change, filling a crucial gap in ongoing food waste mitigation efforts. By demonstrating innovative, user-centric approaches, it paves the way for broader adoption and more sustainable practices across various communities and settings.
