Investigation on uses of Interactive AR technology

Project Abstract

I decided to create this project due to the current interest in augmented reality technologies by larger companies like Apple and Meta as well as the ever-increasing use of the technology in both casual and industrial environments with mixed reality games and the use of AR in the medical field. This project aims to create an augmented reality game that explores a specific area of AR technology that I don’t think is common use but I feel could be highly useful if widely adopted. To meet this aim I produced a mixed reality board game that uses both virtual and physical elements. This includes scannable cards which alter the visuals of the game as well as impact the players’ in-game stats. From this investigation, I found that having physical elements impact the augmented digital environment can help increase the players’ immersion as it feels like the user is making a clearer impact. As well as allowing them to have tactile objects with the item cards which is something that I feel could help improve people’s understanding of AR experiences through having actual objects to interact with as well as further improve their immersion as they are physically interacting with the virtually displayed environment.
