Better Timetable

Project Abstract

Swansea University uses a range of timetabling solutions across its faculties. However, the unique challenges associated with the CELCAT system, particularly concerning navigation, are not observed in the others. Better Timetable is thus a web application that aims to redevelop the existing timetable-viewing experience of CELCAT. That is, to reach their timetable, a user would have to (1) go through a list of assorted titles (course/module/location/etc.) to find their relevant group and then (2) have to select the week of the schedule they wish to view. Better Timetable now reduces this to a one-step process by which a user types in their course title and is presented with their schedule for that week. This project comprises the creation of a web application with its main priorities being weekly schedule access and easing general navigation from course selection to timetable view – a combination of web scraping, data processing, and general web programming techniques (JavaScript/CSS) have been employed as part of this work.
