Bringing Unreal Engine scenes to the web

Project Abstract

Professionals using Unreal Engine have a hard time accurately representing and publicizing their creations to the broader audience on the internet. Due to the limitations of hardware (mobile devices, tablets, laptops) and web engines, it is extremely difficult to directly use complex geometry, apply shading information and still provide a smooth and interactive experience. Furthermore, Unreal Engine has a very limited capability of exporting scenes for the web due to massive packaged build sizes and visual fidelity that it provides. This project attempts to resolve those issues by using panoramic image and video capture, exporting lower quality geometry of the level and using shader to project captured media onto a three-dimensional model in the web renderer. This method proves that it is possible to display the same or near-same level of visual fidelity and interactability as in Unreal Engine but natively on the web, enabling creators to easily share their creations.
