Developing an IOS mobile application for reporting animal cruelty and injury cases to SPCA
Project Abstract
Having previously volunteered as an animal inspector for my local SPCA, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by overburdened welfare organizations. Responding to reports of cruelty and helping animals in need was deeply rewarding, but the team was limited by resources. I was motivated to find a way to leverage my skills as both an animal lover and mobile developer. Inspired by cases that went unreported due to lack of access, I set out to create the first mobile app enabling real-time reports directly to SPCA.The app will be developed by Xcode and Swift, featuring a simple and intuitive interface optimized for engaging widespread community support. Upon launching, public like you and me can quickly log details of witnessed incidents, including description, photos and location. All reports are securely submitted to a database accessible by SPCA administrators. They can efficiently review and process urgent submissions.Overall, the project demonstrated how technology can harness public participation to support organizations’ response capabilities. The app establishes a model for connecting community concerns directly to the proper authorities, filling an important gap. Future work includes expanding the platform to Android and additional countries. The inspectorate team will also test the app to provide feedback to improve user experience. With continued development and improvement, it may become a globally impactful tool for protecting animal welfare.
