BLACK AND WHITE IMAGE COLORIZATION USING PYTHON, OPENCV, AND DEEP LEARNING
Project Abstract
In the realm of computer vision, the process of image colorization stands as a captivating challenge. It involves infusing grayscale images with vibrant hues, breathing life into moments captured in monochrome. This proposal embarks on a journey into the realm of black and white image colorization, exploring the fusion of Python, OpenCV, and deep learning methodologies to unlock the potential of grayscale imagery. The allure of colorization lies not merely in the aesthetic enhancement of images but also in its profound implications across various domains. From revitalizing historical photographs to augmenting medical imaging for diagnosis, the ability to add color to grayscale images has transformative power. Yet, this process is not without its complexities, demanding sophisticated computational approaches to faithfully reproduce the colors of the world. At its core, the aim of this project is to bridge the gap between grayscale and color imagery, leveraging advancements in deep learning to imbue grayscale images with a spectrum of colors. Through the lens of Python, a versatile and widely adopted programming language, and the capabilities of OpenCV, a comprehensive computer vision library, I embark on a quest to create an automated solution for black and white image colorization. The objectives of this endeavor are multifaceted. Firstly, I seek to delve into the wealth of existing research and methodologies surrounding black and white image colorization, laying a solid foundation for my endeavors. With insights gleaned from this exploration, I endeavor to design and implement a deep learning model tailored specifically for the task at hand. This model will serve as the backbone of my colorization algorithm, harnessing the power of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to decipher the intricate relationships between grayscale and color information.
