Project Abstract
In recent years , there has been an increased demand for intelligent and context-aware digital assistants, particularly for mental healthguidance and school counseling. As an increasing number of students and educational institutions recognize the benefits of personalized, user-friendly, and stigma-free online communication, it is the objective of this project to address this demand through developing a chatbot capable of delivering useful guidance and assistance for mental health. The project is relevant because there are more mental health concerns and more people use AI applications to help students. This project proposes the creastion of “Seralis,” a deep learning, machine learning, and natural language processing-enabled chatbot based on Python to mimic how humans speak. The aim is to develop and assess an assistant that will provide useful suggestions to Swansea University students and staff. It will also provide emotional support to users with mental health issues. The core research question is: “Can a chatbot using deep learning provide useful and informative dialogue in university and healthcare?” The project will utilize a HTML, CSS, and JavaScript web frontend for access, and incorporate models utilizing the OpenRouter API. It will parse data and classify it to model natural conversation flows, with relevance and empathy being the priority of the design. The assistant will be compared against realistic application scenarios to assess usability and utility. If successful, the outcome should demonstrate the ways in which AI can provide beneficial assistance to mental health services and students. The anticipated outcome is a web-based chatbot that is capable of speaking with kindness and providing beneficial information, demonstrating the use of NLP systems in both mental health and education. The project has the potential to open up further AI applications aimed at assisting individuals within education and mental health.
