The digital revolution and us: Data and computing in south Wales
Project Abstract
The history of Wales? industrial prowess has been well documented but what of the transition to the computerised age. The core aim of the project is to explore the impact computers and digital technology have had and continue to have on life in south Wales. As a lot of this work is not easily accessible or documented publicly the main method employed was to go to local archives and search through their records. With the information gathered, the next step is to present it out to the world in the medium of exhibitions. Working alongside Swansea?s History of Computing Collection and Swansea Museum we have or are in the process of update and creating new exhibitions. The project has a key focus on the south Wales region but a major trend discovered is that the vast majority of our computer history can be traced back to Newport and the surrounding areas. For example, in a factory in Abercarn is where most of the BBC Micros were produced.
