PLUTO-2: An improved coastal observatory for public engagement and academic research

Project Abstract

The Plymouth Underwater Teaching Observatory (PLUTO) was an underwater camera installed on the seabed of Plymouth Sound by the University of Plymouth (UoP) to interest and educate the public about marine life. This project is a replacement system (PLUTO-2) with a set of additional features that will be a valuable resource for future academic research. Improvements in PLUTO-2 include two underwater sensors, an underwater microphone, a surface-based camera, and connections to two UoP weather stations. To get these components working together, this project also involved configuring and testing hardware, such as an underwater wiper for the camera, wiring components together, and the data link pairs that will transmit data from the cameras and sensors back to the UoP server.Although the system has not been installed in Plymouth Sound yet, the system and all its components have been tested in a laboratory environment and are ready for deployment, which is expected to be later this year. Once installed, the two cameras will live stream to YouTube and the streams will be embedded into the UoP?s PLUTO website, a Raspberry Pi will collect the sensor data, and the server will collect API data. The server will then collect all the data together, upload it to a data portal for UoP staff and students to access, as well as keeping a local archive as a backup.Once online, access to previously unavailable meteorological data from the last 3 years will be possible, and the sensors will begin building new datasets for use in the future. Other UoP researchers will also be able to add their own datasets to the portal via an API, enabling both wider and easier access.
