Historical Investigation of Popular Trends in Programming Languages

Project Abstract

This project was inspired by the question of how we arrived at the current set of programming languages used today, and how established paradigms were developed from the early eras of programmable systems. By analysing this data, we hope to be able to estimate future trends and needs in the programming industry. This analysis will primarily be accomplished through examining languages with significant impact on the field of programming or which have had a dominant place in the market. Key findings include a shift away from the current ecosystem of object-oriented languages towards a more imperative paradigm as well as a noticeable impact of the arrival of widespread Internet access on the science of language development.
