Developing Classifiers to classify extremist content online

Project Abstract

Today, the internet is more accessible than ever to young people. While this can be seen as a great thing, the internet doesn?t come without any dangers. With easier access to the internet, we also have easier access to extremist content online. In this project I research how young people aged between 12 to 17 years can inadvertently come across extremist content online, and how the more you access such content, the more you will get recommended similar links. It can be very difficult to stop radicalisation if the child is unaware of what is happening to them. Because of this I am developing a software that visualises your accessed content and how it leads to similar content, I visualise this in graphic form that shows bubbles coming off the initial node. This visualitation can be filtered and multiple data sets are available. My research and creation of new software can lead to a decrease in children getting radicalised and holding extremist views. It is difficult to stop radicalisation if the child, nor the parents know it?s happening, but if my software alerts the parents of what is happening, they will be able to act accordingly early on.
