Interpreting the Instructions of a Conductor using Computer Vision

Project Abstract

I am a relatively new conductor and started last year to lead Swansea University’s Wind Orchestra. Whilst I was learning, I was desperate for a tool that could assist in teaching myself the discipline. I therefore set out to create an application that uses a webcam and computer vision to interpret the movements of a conductors baton. This can then be used to aid the conductors learning process and give them the ability to improve their conducting without needing an orchestra or professional conductor to advise them. I know that from my own experience, any aspiring conductor would benefit from a tool like this, and there is no such application available for the public. After I have completed my work, I plan to open-source the project and release it, to help anyone who is just starting conducting or who wants to perfect the basics of the skill. As my software is very general in design, it can be fully taken advantage of by beginner or intermediate conductors, conducting small ensembles to full orchestras or choirs.
