GPT for Access to Justice

Project Abstract

The “GPT for Access to Justice” initiative intends to solve access to justice issues by automating the delivery of online interactive legal services via sophisticated natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) such as GPT. The impetus for this research stems from the challenges people have when attempting to interpret complicated legal material, which frequently results in insufficient access to legal help. The unique proposal of this effort is to develop an expert system using technologies such as DocAssemble, resulting in a user-friendly platform that provides individualized legal advice to individuals coping with a variety of difficulties. This project’s methodologies include identifying and appraising a certain legal service domain, analyzing relevant legal documents, and creating templates for interactive legal services utilizing GPT-based technologies. The main strategy entails assessing the tool’s usability and efficacy with a relevant user population. The project’s core outcomes include successfully identifying and assessing a legal service domain, developing templates for interactive legal services utilizing GPT-based technologies, and implementing these services on the DocAssemble platform. The major findings emphasize the potential for AI technology, namely GPT, to dramatically enhance individuals’ access to and utilization of legal information. Finally, the “GPT for Access to Justice” initiative adds to the field of LegalTech by proving the ability of AI and LLMs to automate the provision of online, interactive legal services. If successful, this initiative will be a significant resource for enhancing access to justice, especially for individuals who cannot afford legal representation or who struggle to read complicated legal paperwork.
