A Framework for Implementing Software Defined Firewall in Automotive ECUs

Project Abstract

AbstractThis research project proposes a software-defined firewall (SDF) based on software-defined networking (SDN) concepts to address the increased vulnerability of electronic control units (ECUs) to cyberattacks in the face of increasing digital integration in the automotive sector. This innovative method complies with ISO/SAE 21434 requirements, guaranteeing that the firewall is both compatible with existing laws and flexible enough to meet changing cybersecurity needs. The project uses a multi-layered security approach that combines software and hardware elements to create a complete defence system with dynamic threat response capabilities. Methodologically speaking, the project involves developing a scalable and adaptable firewall framework after conducting a thorough research of current and emerging cyber threats to automotive ECUs. This framework focuses on measures like detection rates, response times, and overall system stability under cyberattack scenarios. It is evaluated in simulated environments and designed for real-world implementation. Based on the research, software-defined firewalls significantly increase the automotive ECUs’ resistance to various cyberthreats. They provide strong security that can adjust to new threats and adhere to strict cybersecurity guidelines. One important feature that guarantees continuous security without requiring physical alterations to the firewall is its ability to perform updates remotely and centrally manage configurations. The study makes a significant contribution to the field of automotive cybersecurity by showing how a software-defined strategy might drastically change the connected vehicle security landscape. This study sets the way for future developments in safeguarding ever-more complex automotive systems by developing a firewall that adapts in real-time to new threats and easily integrates with existing car designs.
